49ers coach Kyle Shanahan addresses the media after San Francisco’s Week 2 preseason win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night at Levi’s Stadium, and shares specific praise for QB Josh Dobbs and wide receiver Jacob Cowing.

SANTA CLARA -- Brock Purdy got the start, but it was quarterback Joshua Dobbs who stole the show during the 49ers' 16-10 preseason win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at Levi's Stadium.

Dobbs strengthened his case for San Francisco's backup quarterback job by putting on a dazzling display with his arm and legs against New Orleans' defense.

Dobbs led the 49ers on scoring drives in each of the three series he played on Sunday, including an impressive two-minute drill to close out the first half where he marched San Francisco's offense 80 yards in 1:16, capping it off with a one-yard rushing touchdown.

Dobbs finished the night 12 of 21 for 133 passing yards, adding another 25 yards on the ground while showing off his invaluable rushing ability. The veteran quarterback's dual-threat performance didn't just wow fans, as Purdy also was incredibly impressed with Dobbs' outing against the Saints.

Purdy believes playing in 49ers' preseason games helps him ‘feel again'

Quarterback Brock Purdy speaks to the media after the San Francisco 49ers’ 16-10 win over the New Orleans Saints about the importance in participating in NFL preseason games like this one Sunday night.

SANTA CLARA -- Many established NFL starters might find it meaningless to play in a preseason game, but don't tell 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy that.

While most of San Francisco's starters sat out of Sunday's 16-10 win over the New Orleans Saints at Levi's Stadium, Purdy was under center when the 49ers took their first offensive snap of the game.

The third-year QB was on the field for San Francisco's first three drives, which left lot to be desired from a production standpoint as Purdy struggled to find rhythm with the ensemble of backups manning the 49ers' skill positions.

For Purdy, however, these preseason reps still were extremely valuable, offering an environment that can't be replicated in practice, effectively helping the young QB build a callus for San Francisco's upcoming 2024 NFL regular-season opener against the New York Jets.

BOX SCORE

SANTA CLARA — Once again, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan turned the play-calling duties over to assistant coach Klay Kubiak.

Shanahan joined 14 presumptive 49ers starters who got the night off in the team’s second 2024 NFL preseason game of the summer.

Brock Purdy started, but it was backup quarterback Josh Dobbs who supplied some highlights with his legs in the 49ers’ 16-10 win against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night at Levi’s Stadium.

49ers' defense keeps Jake Haener, Saints out of the end zone

Jake Haener and the Saints drove to the 49ers' 22-yard line, thanks to the quarterback's deep connections, including a fourth-and-5 just across midfield.

Jake Moody field goal increases 49ers' lead to 16-10

49ers rookie quarterback Tanner Mordecai's first drive ended in points, as Jake Moody kicked a 36-yard field goal that gave San Francisco a 16-10 lead with 7:02 left in the fourth quarter.

Mordecai, an undrafted free-agent signee, took the 49ers 62 yards on 13 plays, and completed 4 of 6 passes for 44 yards. Danny Gray made a juggling catch for 13 of those yards and a first down in Saints territory.

Kyle Shanahan again surrenders 49ers' offensive play-calling

Coach Kyle Shanahan, for the second consecutive 2024 NFL preseason game, has given up offensive play-calling to 49ers offensive passing game specialist Klay Kubiak.

FOX Sports' Kristina Pink reported just before the start of the second half Sunday that Shanahan didn't plan to call plays after not doing so during the first half against the Saints.

Shanahan's decision to let Kubiak call plays again created a unique situation in which Klay went against his brother, Klint, who is the Saints' offensive coordinator. Klint Kubiak was the 49ers' passing game coordinator in 2023 and joined the Saints before this season.

https://twitter.com/MaioccoNBCS/status/1825350265790464220

Shanahan told reporters after the 49ers' preseason loss to the Titans last week that Kubiak had earned the opportunity. A few days later, the 49ers coach admitted it was a "weird" feeling not being in charge of play-calling.

Saints cut 49ers' lead to 13-10; Brandon Allen now in at QB

The 49ers' defense bent but didn't break on the Saints' second half-opening drive, which ended in a 52-yard Blake Grupe field goal that cut San Francisco's lead to 13-10.

https://twitter.com/Saints/status/1825352830879666262

New Orleans drove 36 yards on nine plays but stalled after reaching the San Francisco 35.

The 49ers then took possession, with Brandon Allen under center after Josh Dobbs' successful first-half showing. Allen and Co. lasted just six snaps before having to punt the ball back to the Saints, but he impressively escaped a New Orleans sack attempt on the final play of the drive.

Josh Dobbs' TD run gives 49ers 13-7 halftime lead

If Josh Dobbs wanted to make a statement in the 49ers' backup quarterback competition, he surely did that Sunday.

All three of Dobbs' first-half drives against the Saints ended in points. His last drive was an 11-play, 79-yard march that featured a 38-yard dime to Jacob Cowing down the sideline and ended with Dobbs' 1-yard touchdown run on a fourth-down read-option play just before halftime for a 13-7 San Francisco lead.

Dobbs, an eighth-year pro who has 14 starts in 21 NFL games, ended the half 12-of-21 passing for 132 yards, and also had three carries for 25 yards. Brandon Allen, you're up next.

How 49ers QB Purdy played in NFL preseason debut vs. Saints
Quarterback Brock Purdy speaks to the media after the San Francisco 49ers’ 16-10 win over the New Orleans Saints about the importance in participating in NFL preseason games like this one Sunday night.

SANTA CLARA —  It was an inauspicious start for Brock Purdy and the 49ers' offense Sunday night against the New Orleans Saints, but mainly because it wasn't the group the quarterback usually has at his side.

With much of San Francisco's starting lineup sitting out of the game, Purdy couldn't get into a rhythm in his 2024 NFL preseason debut at Levi's Stadium, completing just two of his six pass attempts for 11 yards across three drives, with a 42.4 passer rating.

George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, Kyle Juszczyk, Christian McCaffrey and Jauan Jennings all watched from the sideline while their quarterback tried to move the ball down the field. Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Willliams remain off the field, with each involved in contract disputes.

Purdy’s first drive lasted just five plays and moved the ball 10 yards, but it was his most productive drive of the night. The longest play was a 6-yard pass to tight end Brayden Willis. Undrafted free agent Cody Schrader carried the ball twice, once for 5 yards and another for a loss of 1.

Strip-sack leads to Jake Moody field goal; 49ers trail 7-6

T.Y. McGill and Alex Barrett made Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler's first series Sunday one to forget, as the 49ers defenders' pressure led to a strip-sack, and Barrett recovered the loose football midway through the second quarter.

https://twitter.com/49ers/status/1825339163752984670

That set up Josh Dobbs and the 49ers' offense at the Saints' 38-yard line, but they couldn't crack the end zone against New Orleans' stout defense. Dobbs did convert a third-and-10 with an impressive 13-yard scramble to the Saints' 15, and an ensuing 24-yard Jake Moody field goal cut San Francisco's deficit to 7-6 with 2:42 remaining in the half.

Josh Dobbs in, Brock Purdy out as 49ers' QB vs. Saints

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy's three series Sunday didn't go as he'd like, as he finished 2-of-6 passing for just 11 yards and then gave way to Josh Dobbs early in the second quarter.

Dobbs, who's competing with Brandon Allen for the 49ers' backup QB job, fared much better on his first drive. He completed all six of his passes for 48 yards on a nine-play drive that ended in a Jake Moody 47-yard field goal to cut San Francisco's deficit to 7-3.

Three-time Super Bowl champ suggests Aiyuk should re-sign with 49ers

Three-time Super Bowl champ suggests Aiyuk should re-sign with 49ers
Kyle Shanahan addresses the media following the San Francisco 49ers’ training camp practice on Monday.

Former New England Patriots wide receiver and Bay Area native Julian Edelman knows what he would do if he was in Brandon Aiyuk's shoes.

"If I was Brandon Aiyuk, I'd be a San Francisco [49er] Week 1," Edelman told Charissa Thompson on FOX's pregame show before the 49ers' preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at Levi's Stadium. "Usually a team goes out and wins a Super Bowl, and everyone tries to get paid. They haven't won a Super Bowl, but everyone is trying to get paid.

"So, if they can have the mental toughness, which means having the ability to do what's best for the team when it's not necessarily best for you, I'm just telling you, there's a jackpot at the end of the rainbow. That is a huge payday if they go out and get it done."

Aiyuk has sat out all of training camp and both of the 49ers' preseason games so far as he tries to secure a contract extension or a trade to a team willing to give him the deal he wants.

Brown's picture-perfect hit left the Saints with third-and-7 on their own 9, and after the ensuing pass fell incomplete, New Orleans punted the ball back to San Francisco. Unfortunately for the 49ers, Brock Purdy couldn't move the offense on his third drive and again went three-and-out.

49ers lineup update: Jordan Mason will not play vs. Saints

Jordan Mason, who scored a touchdown in the 49ers' preseason opener last week at Tennessee, will sit out Sunday's game against New Orleans, giving two other running backs the opportunity to impress coaches.

https://twitter.com/MaioccoNBCS/status/1825319455494406415

Mason, who gained 34 yards on six carries last week while playing all 11 snaps on the 49ers' first drive, isn't the only notable San Francisco player who will sit out Sunday.

https://twitter.com/jenniferleechan/status/1825323658904215797

Mason, a third-year pro, has a legitimate shot to be the 49ers' No. 2 running back behind All-Pro Christian McCaffrey, since Elijah Mitchell has missed significant practice time this summer with a hamstring injury and struggled to avoid injuries in his first three NFL seasons. Mason, meanwhile, has 464 yards and four TDs on 83 carries over 33 games in his first two NFL seasons.

Greenlaw fires up his guys

Greenlaw is on the road to recovery after rupturing his Achilles during the 49ers' Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in February.

The 49ers placed Greenlaw on the physically-unable-to-perform list when training camp opened in late July.

TB12 is in the house

Tom Brady, like the rest of us, evidently wants to see how Brock Purdy looks in his first preseason action of 2024.

Brady, who retired before the 2023 season and joined FOX as a color analyst this year, was spotted at Levi's Stadium as 49ers and Saints players began their respective warmups. 49ers legend Frank Gore joined him in what had to be an awesome conversation between two football greats.

https://twitter.com/NBCS49ers/status/1825302231715139919

Brady could have been on the field as a 49ers quarterback, if coach Kyle Shanahan had his way before the 2023 season, when the two spoke about the possibility with Purdy still recovering from elbow surgery. However, Purdy bounced back nicely, as Shanahan and the team hoped, and led San Francisco to a Super Bowl appearance. No doubt he wants to do even more this season.

Adam Amin, Mark Sanchez and Kristina Pink will be on the 49ers-Saints FOX broadcast, meaning Brady likely is at Levi's to observe the team he grew up rooting for as he starts his next career in football.

Why 49ers aren't forcing Aiyuk to practice amid contract talks

Why 49ers aren't forcing Aiyuk to practice amid contract talks
“49ers Training Camp Live” hosts Matt Maiocco and Jennifer Lee Chan break down the versatility of 49ers’ offense.

SANTA CLARA — It is no mystery why Brandon Aiyuk did not take part in any of the 49ers’ first 17 practices of training camp.

When negotiations with the 49ers aimed at arriving at a multi-year contract stalled, Aiyuk requested a trade one week before the opening of training camp.

It’s a well-known, understood practice that a player who has an unresolved contract issue will avoid the risk of injury — and maintain leverage in negotiations — with the decision to withhold his services to the team.

And teams know that it’s not a reasonable approach to threaten a fine to force a player to practice against his will, either.

Five 49ers to watch in Purdy's anticipated preseason debut vs. Saints

Five 49ers to watch in Purdy's anticipated preseason debut vs. Saints
“49ers Training Camp Live” hosts Matt Maiocco and Jennifer Lee Chan break down the versatility of 49ers’ offense.

SANTA CLARA — Originally, the 49ers figured to play few (if any) of their regulars in this week's NFL preseason game against the New Orleans Saints.

After all, the 49ers’ starters were expected to get the equivalent of two full games’ worth of practice snaps against the Saints in back-to-back joint practices.

However, injuries left the 49ers short-handed and forced coach Kyle Shanahan to cancel the head-to-head practices, which were scheduled to take place this week in Irvine.

Still, it’s the backups who figure to take center stage again on Sunday night at Levi’s Stadium.
