Hopkins was designated for assignment last week when the Reds signed former Giants catcher Austin Wynns to a major league contract. Hopkins went 7 for 41 (.171) in his first 25 major-league games last season, with all seven hits being singles, and also slashing .308/.411/.514 in 94 games at Triple-A Louisville.
The Hopkins trade is the Giants' latest move in the past week, after they signed Korean outfielder Jung Hoo Lee to a six-year, $113 million contract and reportedly adding right-hander Devin Sweet and Tom Murphy.
