The 49ers continue to stockpile running backs.
With the 194th pick in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft on Saturday, San Francisco selected speedster Elijah Mitchell from Louisiana.
The team entered the draft with five running backs on the roster before taking Ohio State’s Trey Sermon at No. 88 Friday, and now Mitchell.

In 42 career games with Louisiana, Mitchell totaled 3,267 yards and 41 touchdowns. Mitchell averaged 6.2 yards per carry throughout his career and added 49 receptions for five scores.
Mitchell’s speed is elite, as he reportedly clocked a 4.32 to 4.38 40-yard dash at his pro day on March 29, depending on whose stopwatch you used.

Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. are the top holdovers from last year, but Wayne Gallman Jr., JaMychal Hasty and Austin Walter still are on the roster as well. The 49ers will have a crowded running back room this summer when camp takes place in Santa Clara.
The competition should be heavy amongst 49ers tailbacks in 2021. But coach Kyle Shanahan loves to mix and match his running backs, so the rookies should have a fair shot to break the rotation.
