Report: Warriors held workout with mystery prospect in Miami

Share

The Warriors last Thursday reportedly met with draft prospect Deni Avdija after watching him work out in Atlanta.

The Athletic's Marcus Thompson last Friday reported that while on that East Coast trip, Golden State brass also had in-person conversations with James Wiseman and Anthony Edwards, and that both players were "beasts" when owner Joe Lacob, president of basketball operations Bob Myers and coach Steve Kerr observed them on the court.

Apparently the Warriors, who posses the rights to the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, saw another prospect up close and personal as well. We just don't know who it was.

"I think the people in the league think that if they hold the No. 2 pick, and if James Wiseman is there that they will take him," ESPN's Brian Windhorst said to Jas Kang of Golden State of Mind. "That’s what people in the league believe.

"I know that they they got some headlines because (it) became known that they were looking at Avdija -- they were looking at him in Atlanta last week. But before that, they spent two days in Miami with Wiseman. And I think they had another prospect that they (tried) to secretly (bring) into Miami to work out there.

"It all depends on what gets public, or what they want to get public."

It makes perfect sense for the Warriors to try to see as many guys as they can. Per NBA rules, they only are allowed to meet with 10 different prospects, and can get together with someone a second time if need be.

Golden State reportedly is tentatively scheduled to interview LaMelo Ball early next week, and it doesn't sound like a workout will be included in the arrangement.

It won't be surprising if the Warriors ultimately trade down, which makes it imperative to gather as much intel as possible on all of the projected lottery picks.

Plain and simple -- nobody has a firm grasp on what they will do, which very much is by design.
