Shanahan sees scenario where Jimmy G remains with 49ers

PALM BEACH, Fla. — So you’re saying there’s a chance?

Kyle Shanahan believes there could be a future where Jimmy Garoppolo is still on the 49ers' roster at the start of organized team activities (OTAs). While the head coach admits he hasn’t spoken to his veteran quarterback much during the offseason, there is a scenario where the 30-year-old signal-caller still is part of the team going forward.

Surgery on Garoppolo’s throwing shoulder has caused trade interest from other teams to go cold and Shanahan understands why. The eight-year veteran isn't scheduled to throw a football again until July, which could keep other teams cautious well into training camp.

“Everything is good with Jimmy,” Shanahan said. “I think everyone knows he got the surgery which made the situation a little bit tougher. I think that did put it on hold and we are alright with that.”

The 49ers made a series of adjustments to the existing contracts of Arik Armstead, George Kittle and Dee Ford which allowed them to meet the salary cap by the league deadline.

For the foreseeable future, Garoppolo is part of the 49ers' roster until another team makes an offer they feel is in line with the quarterback's value.

In agreement with general manager John Lynch's statement on Monday, there is no scenario where the team "gives away" their franchise quarterback or releases him.

“We got it on the books right now and we will keep it that way until something else can improve us,” Shanahan said.

In line with the head coach’s usual standard of secrecy, Shanahan refused to answer questions regarding if Garoppolo would be under center for their 2022 Week 1 opener. Shanahan explained that the team has yet put together a roster with the draft still weeks away.

Garoppolo currently is rehabbing away from the team facility in Los Angeles, but Shanahan expects his quarterback to head back to Santa Clara for the start of the offseason if the team is unable to procure a trade before then.

“When we start up, he’s with our team,” Shanahan said. “I expect him to be with us. I know his rehab is going to take longer. I don’t think he’s going to be ready to throw in OTAs so it will be a training camp thing. I haven’t discussed it with him and we want to do the best thing that gets his rehab right.

“I fully expect if Jimmy is on our team, to be a part of our team.”

For now, Garoppolo remains a part of the 49ers' quarterback room that also includes the No. 3 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft in Trey Lance and Nate Sudfeld, who the team just re-signed to a one-year deal worth $2 million guaranteed.
