49ers' Tartt could be out for a while with lingering injury

SANTA CLARA -- Strong safety Jaquiski Tartt continues to be hampered by a toe injury that cut short his 2020 season.

On Tuesday, coach Kyle Shanahan did not sound optimistic about Tartt’s ability to get back on the field any time soon. Shanahan said he was not sure if Tartt would be able to play this season.

“I don’t know,” he said. “We think he should, with the timeline and everything, but it is bothering him. He isn’t ready to go, yet. We thought he would be, with the time it’s been given. He isn’t.

"And that’s just a fact.”

Tartt sustained a hyperextended toe -- or "turf toe" -- in November and finished the season on injured reserve. He did not take part in the offseason program due to the injury.

Tartt spent the first 10 days of training camp on the COVID-19 list. After he was cleared, he immediately went on physically unable to perform due to his toe injury.

“I don’t see it as day-to-day right now,” Shanahan said. “I know he’s not where he wants to be or where we want him to be and it’s going to take some time.”

The 49ers will look to sign another safety, Shanahan said.

Veteran Tavon Wilson has been lining up alongside starting free safety Jimmie Ward with the first-team defense. Another veteran, Tony Jefferson, is out indefinitely with groin and hamstring injuries.
