Johnny Cueto ‘really excited' after rehab start, set for next step

SAN FRANCISCO -- Johnny Cueto's legendary Instagram page mostly has been filled with workout clips in recent months, but on Sunday night the pitcher posted a series of dancing videos to his story. Cueto shimmied in ripped white jeans, a bright yellow shirt, white shoes and a light cowboy hat, and he had a good reason to be celebrating.

Earlier in the day, Cueto began his rehab assignment by throwing two scoreless and dominant innings in an Arizona League game in Scottsdale. Cueto, back on a mound for the first time since last summer's Tommy John surgery, struck out five and needed just 21 pitches, 19 of which were strikes, to get through two. His fastball was mostly 91 mph and he hit 92 a couple of times.

"He was really excited about where he was," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's fine (physically), feels good. He's great. He's really excited."

The Giants are, too. Cueto has sailed through the lengthy rehab process and should be ready to help them in September. He will pitch once more in Arizona on August 9, and then join the San Jose Giants for a couple of rehab starts and the Sacramento River Cats for two more.

If Cueto continues to clear every hurdle, that schedule would have him back the first week of September. The Giants do have an open rotation spot. They'll use rookie call-up Conner Menez in the fifth spot Tuesday.
