
INDIANAPOLIS – Injury plagued 49ers defensive back Jimmie Ward sustained a quadriceps injury in the first quarter of the team’s preseason game Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts.
Ward did not see action in the first quarter on defense. His injury is believed to occurred on special teams.
Richard Sherman started the game at left cornerback, the spot Ward has played during training camp for the 49ers. Last year, Ward opened the season as the team’s starting free safety.

Ward has been bothered by a hamstring injury in training camp after missing time in the offseason program with an ankle injury.
Ward missed 22 games over his first four NFL seasons due to injuries. Last year, he went on injured reserve, missing the final nine games of the season, with a broken forearm.
