49ers camp report: Jimmy Garoppolo throws five straight interceptions

SANTA CLARA – Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on Wednesday had his worst day on the 49ers’ practice field since arriving in the middle of 2017.

Garoppolo threw interceptions on five consecutive pass attempts on the team’s final day training before traveling to Denver, where they will practice Friday and Saturday against the Denver Broncos. The teams will meet Monday night in a preseason game.

“The defense did great today, and obviously he struggled,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “You hope to never have a day like ... So when you do that, you hope that you practice long enough to give him a chance to play out of it.”

Strong safety Jaquiski Tartt had the first interception, followed by free safety Tarvarius Moore, Richard Sherman, Ahkello Witherspoon and Moore again. Garoppolo finished the day with more productive plays in the red zone and two-minute drill.

“Sometimes it’s hard to make the right decisions when you’re fired up and competitive,” Shanahan said. “Usually, you make a bad play, it makes your mind go a little sideways.

“That’s why sometimes it is a good situation to put guys when that does happen. You try to protect them in a game, but in practice it’s the exact opposite. When there’s an issue, you kind of poke at it a little bit more to see how guys react.”

Offensive play of the day

In a two-minute drill, quarterback Nick Mullens delivered a 49-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Bourne, who took advantage of confusion in the 49ers’ defensive backfield to maneuver wide open deep down the field.

Defensive plays of the day

Linebacker Kwon Alexander had coverage against tight end Ross Dwelley on a crossing route. Alexander extended out to deflect Garoppolo’s pass. The ball was redirected straight to Tartt, who pulled in the interception and returned it far down the field.

Injury report

Tight end George Kittle remains day-to-day with a calf strain. It’s uncertain whether he will practice or play in Denver. Left tackle Joe Staley experienced some discomfort in pectoral and did not take part in 11-on-11 drills.

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw sustained a shoulder stinger Tuesday and did not practice Wednesday. Defensive lineman Jullian Taylor (stiff back) and tight end Levine Toilolo (shoulder) did not practice, either.

Safety Jimmie Ward has been cleared to practice after recovering from a fractured collarbone in June. But the 49ers are easing him back into the mix. He wore pads and went through individuals drill. He is not expected to participate in the practices this week against the Broncos.
