SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez will have season-ending surgery Tuesday on the shoulder he dislocated in June, manager Bruce Bochy said Monday.
Bochy said he was optimistic this timetable would make Sanchez available for spring training.

"We were hopeful. We were being optimistic that he could find a way to rehab, to get to a point where he could help us," Bochy said said. "But as each day went by we knew those chances were diminishing . It was at a point where we had to make a decision and make sure he was ready for next year."
Bochy emphasized that Sanchez was able to swing a bat but that throwing remained a problem. The veteran did not sustain any specific setback.
"Fortunately we have (Jeff) Keppinger so we're covered there," Bochy said. "He does a nice job on both sides of the ball, with the glove and the bat. He's a steady guy, just like Freddy and we're pretty comfortable with him at second base the rest of the way."
Perhaps in anticipation of Sanchez's procedure, the Giants traded for infielder Orlando Cabrera from the Cleveland Indians last weekend. San Francisco gave up minor league outfielder Thomas Neal for the veteran.
Sanchez dislocated the shoulder diving for a grounder June 10.
In 60 games this year, he was hitting .289 with a .332 on-base percentage, a.397 slugging percentage, three home runs and 24 RBIs.
