Warriors' Wiggins enters COVID protocol, out vs. Kings

The Warriors will be without a second starter against the Kings on Monday night after forward Andrew Wiggins was placed into the NBA's health and safety protocol Sunday night.

Wiggins joins guard Jordan Poole in the protocol. Both players will miss the game against the Kings at Chase Center.

Because Wiggins has received a COVID-19 vaccine, he needs two negative tests, at least 24 hours apart, in order to be cleared to play.

Wiggins, one of the Warriors' most consistent players, was held out of the Warriors' loss to the Toronto Raptors on Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena because of left knee soreness. It was his first missed game of the season.

Wiggins' vaccination status became one of the biggest storylines of training camp for the Warriors. After having a religious exemption denied by the NBA at the end of September, Wiggins held firm that he had no plans to get vaccinated, deeming it a private matter.

Because of the city of San Francisco's vaccine mandate, Wiggins was facing the possibility of not being allowed to play in home games at Chase Center.

But in early October, a few weeks before the start of the 2021-22 season, Wiggins received the COVID-19 vaccine, clearing him to play in all games.

After all that, Wiggins is having one of the best seasons of his NBA career. In 29 games, he's averaging 18.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 31.1 minutes. The former No. 1 overall draft pick is shooting 49 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range, both career highs.

Without Wiggins and Poole, the Warriors will be missing their second and third-leading scorers, who are combining to average nearly 37 points per game.

But the Kings also are dealing with their own COVID-19 issues as De'Aaron Fox, Davion Mitchell, Terence Davis, Marvin Bagley III, Alex Len and Louis King are in the health and safety protocol. Starting center Richaun Holmes is recovering from an eye injury and is listed as day-to-day.
