Rival execs asked if Steph's contract becomes Dubs liability

Share

Steph Curry last week signed a four-year contract extension with the Warriors worth about $215 million.

During the final season of the deal in 2025-26, the three-time NBA champion will earn $59.6 million at the age of 38.

Are some NBA higher-ups skeptical about the agreement?

It sure seems that way.

"Multiple rival executives asked me if Curry's new mega-extension could become a liability on the back end," ESPN's Zach Lowe wrote Wednesday morning.

What are your thoughts Mr. Lowe?

"Hogwash. Who even cares? Everything that has happened to the Warriors -- the titles, the quadrupling (at least) in team valuation, the new arena, record-breaking revenues -- all starts with Curry," he writes. "None of it happens without him.

"Pay him everything."

Correct, correct and correct again.

There is no doubt that the sheer amount of money is staggering. Nobody would deny that.

But there also are myriad reasons to believe Curry still will be producing at a pretty high level as he enters the twilight of his career.

And were the Warriors really going to play hardball with the two-time NBA MVP this offseason and not pay him the maximum amount allowed? No chance.

Who knows where Curry and the Warriors will be three or four years from now. Is there a chance Golden State will have limited flexibility with the roster at some point because of Curry's salary? Yes. You can't rule that out.

But to repeat what Lowe wrote: "Who even cares? Pay him everything."

It's really that simple.
