The Giants have been so good and so consistent since the beginning of the season that it's easy to forget just how much of a surprise they've been. Originally projected for fewer than 76 wins, San Francisco earned its 77th victory of the season on Monday with a 7-5 win over the New York Mets, and still have 43 games left to play.
Before the season started, the NL West was almost unanimously expected to be a two-horse race, and that has played out; it's just that the Giants weren't anticipated to be one of the two thoroughbreds at the front of the pack. Throughout all of MLB, only the LA Dodgers (98.4 percent) had better preseason playoff odds than the San Diego Padres (92.3 percent) according to Fangraphs.
The Giants, meanwhile, were given only a 5.7 percent chance of qualifying for the playoffs.
Fast forward nearly five months, and it's a completely different picture. Entering play Tuesday, both the Giants and Dodgers have a 99.8 percent likelihood of earning a postseason berth. The Padres, on the other hand, are down to a 47.4 percent chance.

San Francisco Giants
The Giants enter Tuesday's game against the Mets with a four-game lead over the Dodgers and 11 games up on the Padres. Barring a colossal meltdown, they're likely to claim either the NL West crown or the first wild-card spot. The former option, obviously, would be more ideal than the latter, but in either case, it's a better position than San Diego currently find itself in.
The Padres are clinging to the second wild-card spot, but with the Cincinnati Reds (1.5 games back), St. Louis Cardinals (4 games) and Philadelphia Phillies (4.5 games) all breathing down their necks, it's bound to be a much more stressful playoff push.
