Cubs' Stroman would ‘love' to play for Giants in future

The Giants may not have landed Marcus Stroman this offseason, but the front office certainly made a strong impression on the newest Chicago Cubs pitcher.

In February, Stroman indicated in a tweet that he and the Giants got pretty far in contract talks before the lockout started in December, and he had nothing but praise for the organization.

Stroman ultimately signed a three-year, $71 million deal with the Cubs, but his compliments to San Francisco continue -- and he isn’t ruling out an eventual stint in the Bay.

The 30-year-old recently told Bob Nightengale of USA Today that he was “overwhelmed” by the Giants’ recruiting process and raved about both Farhan Zaidi and Gabe Kapler during the interview. He said he couldn't have gone wrong in landing with San Francisco.

“To be honest, I love the Giants and everything about that organization,” Stroman told Nightengale. “They were incredible. I was blown away. That organization is headed for great, great things. The people from the top down are incredible. They’re with it, man.”

Stroman was one of the best right-handers available this offseason after compiling a 3.02 ERA with the New York Mets in 2021. His ground ball rate of 50.8 percent was eighth-best in the league, so it’s no wonder why Zaidi was keen on adding him to the Giants rotation.

Crawford offers open-ended response on joining Posey's staff

His contract with the Cubs is significantly larger than those given out to Giants pitchers Anthony DeSclafani (three years, $36 million) and Carlos Rodón (two years, $44 million), who have the two biggest pitching contracts on the books for San Francisco. The Giants also brought back DeSclafani and Alex Wood before signing Rodón, and penned Alex Cobb to a two-year deal to fill out the starting rotation around Logan Webb.

And even though Stroman is now looking ahead to help the Cubs win a fourth World Series title, the Giants are still on his mind.

“I would love it at some point down the road to be a part of that team,” he told Nightengale.
