The NHL has a longer history of players biting one another than you would realize, and it's not relegated to the distant past, either. Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman accused then-Chicago forward Andrew Shaw of biting him during the 2015 Stanley Cup Final, and then-Vancouver Canucks forward Alex Burrows bit Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron in the 2011 Final.
Neither Shaw nor Bergeron was suspended, and neither were Mikhail Grabovski, Marc Savard, or Scott Hartnell in high-profile biting incidents in the last decade. Former NHL forward Jarkko Ruutu was suspended two games in Jan. 2009 for biting former enforcer Andrew Peters.
