49ers Talk: Reaction to Week 12 blowout loss to Packers
By Matt Maiocco, 49ers Insider and Jennifer Lee Chan
Matt Maiocco and Jennifer Lee Chan discuss how the 49ers struggled mightily in Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers.
From miscues to mishaps and many missed tackles, Matt and Jennifer break down how the 49ers were out-performed on all three phases.
Later, Matt and Jennifer assess if the 49ers can build any momentum down the final stretch of the season.

Quarterback Brock Purdy couldn't play in the 49ers' 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday due to a shoulder injury.
But that didn't stop him from doing what he could on the sideline to help his temporary replacement -- San Francisco backup Brandon Allen.
After the game, Allen praised Purdy's assistance as another set of eyes in between drives.
"[Purdy] was great," Allen told reporters. "He asked how I was seeing it, what he was seeing. Some of the rotation stuff they had going on and how he was seeing it. Ideas of where to get the ball. But he was really helpful on the sideline for me."
CMC somberly sits at locker after 49ers' crushing Week 12 loss
By Jennifer Lee Chan

GREEN BAY, Wisc. — There is plenty of blame to go around from the 49ers' 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, but Christian McCaffrey appeared to be taking it harder than most.
The reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year was one of the first 49ers players to speak to the media after the game, but once he was done, instead of gathering his belongings and joining his teammates on the bus for their flight home, McCaffrey sat at his locker, silent.
McCaffrey did not speak to teammates, nor look up at the flurry of activity that is a postgame locker room. The 28-year old running back occasionally looked at his phone during the nearly 15 minutes he sat at his locker, but he seemed more consumed with his own thoughts than with what was on the screen.
McCaffrey was held to only 31 yards on 11 carries for a 2.8-yard average. The All-Pro was involved in the passing game with three catches on four targets for 37 yards, but also was responsible for a fumble with just over 10 minutes left in the game.
Maiocco's 49ers Report Card: Team grades in blowout loss to Packers
By Matt Maiocco, 49ers Insider

GREEN BAY, Wisc. — The 49ers have been unable to come up with the solutions to pull out of their tailspin.
“We got embarrassed,” coach Kyle Shanahan said after the 49ers’ 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday.
“That was probably one of the worst ones I’ve been a part of,” All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner said of the 28-point loss.
Indeed. The 49ers’ execution in all facets of the game was bottom-of-the-barrel atrocious.
Warner admits embarrassment after 49ers' blowout loss to Packers
By Jennifer Lee Chan

GREEN BAY, Wisc. — There were no bright spots for the 49ers' defense in their 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, which is new territory for Fred Warner.
“This is probably one of the worst ones I’ve been a part of,” the linebacker said after the game. “It is embarrassing. You got to take it on the chin, take it like a man and move on.”
The 49ers' defense allowed a whopping 169 yards rushing by Josh Jacobs and the Packers' ground game, which is not a normal occurrence for the once-stingy unit. The group missed an uncharacteristic 10 tackles in the first quarter alone.
“That’s just poor technique, poor execution, across the board,” Warner said. “We knew the challenge that their running backs gave us going into the game, and we just didn’t execute.”
Shanahan explains his outburst after 49ers' penalties vs. Packers
By Matt Maiocco, 49ers Insider

GREEN BAY, Wisc. — Coach Kyle Shanahan had a disagreement with referee Craig Wrolstad about the legitimacy of the first of back-to-back penalties for 12 men on the field.
But the second one, there was little room for interpretation. The 49ers blew it.
The rare sequence took place in the middle of the second quarter and led to a Green Bay touchdown.
Shanahan said Wrolstad did not give the 49ers an opportunity to substitute in order to match the Packers’ changing lineup. Originally, Green Bay had one back and two tight ends in the huddle.
Packers cornerback dismisses 49ers' injuries as ‘excuse' for loss
By Angelina Martin

Without star players Brock Purdy, Nick Bosa and Trent Williams on Sunday, there's no denying the 49ers were at a disadvantage entering their Week 12 game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.
But Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon doesn't want to hear it.
"It's the NFL. It's not an excuse," Nixon told reporters after the game (h/t The Athletic's Matt Schneidman). "We didn't have our quarterback. We won three games, so we don't [want to] hear that. We came to play. They should've came to play."
Packers quarterback Jordan Love sustained an MCL sprain in the fourth quarter of Green Bay's season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, then missed their next two games. With backup quarterback Malik Willis in for Love, the Packers defeated the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans in Weeks 2 and 3.

How 49ers' Week 12 loss to Packers impacts NFC playoff picture
By Jordan Elliott

The nightmare 49ers season continues.
San Francisco again got outclassed by an NFC foe, losing 38-10 to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, and fell to 5-6.
The 49ers now are 3-5 in the NFC during the 2024 NFL season and sit on the outside of the playoff picture with a difficult road to a postseason berth in front of them.
With the loss, San Francisco's playoff probability fell to 17 percent. The 49ers currently sit in the NFC's No. 10 seed, and are one game back of the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West, although San Francisco's 1-3 record in division games creates an even larger gap when tiebreakers are factored in.

Maiocco's Observations: Banged-up 49ers come up short vs. Packers
By Matt Maiocco, 49ers Insider

GREEN BAY, Wisc. — The 49ers took the field Sunday with three of their most important players sitting it out.
Quarterback Brock Purdy and defensive end Nick Bosa were declared out for the game before the 49ers traveled on Friday. On Sunday, the 49ers announced left tackle Trent Williams as one of their inactive players due to an ankle injury.
The Green Bay Packers took advantage of the 49ers’ key absences in a 38-10 victory over San Francisco at Lambeau Field.
CMC fumble sets up Packers scoring drive; GB takes 38-10 lead
By Jordan Elliott
Any hope of a miraculous comeback went out the window with the 49ers' third turnover of the game.
Christian McCaffrey appeared to reel off an explosive chunk play but fumbled on his way to the ground to negate a 23-yard gain and hand the ball back to the Packers.
Green Bay then swiftly drove down the field, stringing together a 10-play, 56-yard drive capped off by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Love to Malik Heath to take a commanding 38-10 lead.

Jacobs completes hat trick, gives Packers 31-10 lead with TD
By Angelina Martin
The 49ers' comeback hopes took another hit early in the fourth quarter.
As San Francisco looked to cut its deficit trailing 24-10, Brandon Allen fumbled the ball on a strip sack by defensive end Lukas Van Ness with 12:37 remaining in the game, and Green Bay recovered it at the 49ers' 16-yard line.

The Packers have extended their lead over the 49ers in the second half, but Green Bay is dealing with a few injuries.
Wide receiver Romeo Doubs has been ruled out for the remainder of the game due to a concussion, while running back Josh Jacobs is questionable to return because of cramps.

Though Jacobs went to the locker room, he later returned to the field.
Doubs caught three passes for 54 yards, which led the Packers at the time of his exit. Jacobs has 22 carries for 99 yards and two touchdowns.
Brandon Allen and the 49ers' offense quickly marched down the field into Packers' territory after back-to-back completions of 20 and 21 yards to Jauan Jennings and George Kittle, respectively, to begin the drive.
The drive eventually stalled out after a 3-yard run by Christian McCaffrey and two incompletions from Allen.
A successful 48-yard field-goal attempt from kicker Jake Moody cut Green Bay's lead to 24-10 with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter.
The Packers cashed in on the 49ers' turnover when Josh Jacobs scored on a 1-yard touchdown to give Green Bay a 24-7 lead with 4:28 remaining in the third quarter.

After that, Brandon Allen and the 49ers' offense still were able to drive 40 yards downfield, but their conversion attempt on fourth-and-2 at Green Bay's 39-yard line was unsuccessful and put the ball back into the Packers' hands with 10:51 left in the third quarter.

The 49ers don't like using the term "must-win" during the regular season, but Sunday's game is as close to a postseason game as possible.

Report: 49ers believe QB Purdy should be able to return vs. Bills
By Taylor Wirth

It doesn't appear the 49ers will be without quarterback Brock Purdy for too long.
The third-year NFL signal-caller will miss San Francisco's game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at Lambeau Field with shoulder soreness, but the team believes Purdy should be able to return for the "Sunday Night Football" matchup against the Buffalo Bills in Week 13 at Highmark Stadium, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday morning.
Sunday's game against the Packers will be the 49ers' first game in which Purdy does not start, outside of last season's Week 18 game, since the 24-year-old took over as QB1 two-plus years ago.
In 10 games this season, Purdy has completed 202 of 306 (66 percent) pass attempts for 2,613 yards and 13 touchdowns with eight interceptions, while rushing 51 times for 267 yards and four scores on the ground.
Report: Williams faces ‘uphill battle' to play in 49ers vs. Packers
By Angelina Martin

There could be more bad news for the 49ers on Sunday.
After ESPN's Adam Schefter reported late Saturday night, citing a source, that San Francisco was "optimistic" star left tackle Trent Williams will be able to play in Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeu Field, FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported Sunday that Williams faces an "uphill battle" to play in the game.
"He did not practice at all this week, same as last week," Glazer said on 'FOX NFL Sunday.' "But on Saturday last week, he said, 'I'll be good to go tomorrow.' That's not the case this week, they're still actually waiting to hear from Trent to see how he feels. He's more on the doubtful side. He's still [a game-time decision], they want to see how he's doing later, but it's an uphill battle for Trent Williams to play later."
Williams is one of eight 49ers on the injury report for the Week 12 game at Lambeau Field, but he's the only one listed as questionable. The other seven are out, including defensive end Nick Bosa and quarterback Brock Purdy.
49ers add Gipson to active roster, downgrade Feliciano to out
By Tristi Rodriguez

The 49ers added another name to their long list of players out for Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers.
Offensive lineman Jon Feliciano, who was listed as questionable with a knee injury, was downgraded to out for the pivotal NFC showdown at Lambeau Field.
Feliciano signed a one-year extension with the 49ers this offseason but began the season on IR and has yet to suit up in 2024.
Additionally, San Francisco placed linebacker Tatum Bethune (knee) on injured reserve.

Lambeau Field is hallowed ground in the NFL, and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan revealed what makes the storied stadium so special ahead of San Francisco's matchup with the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
Shanahan explained the uniqueness of Lambeau Field during an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area's Greg Papa on "49ers Game Plan."
"I've done it a number of times, so I've gotten used to it," Shanahan told Papa regarding the mystique of coaching at Lambeau. "I think the coolest part is driving up to it. it's just so neat to be in a town in the middle of nowhere where there's no way you're going to run into a big stadium. You just feel like you're in the backroads, you're not in a big city and it's just all these normal houses. Then out of nowhere there's this huge stadium and it's packed. The history there is unbelievable, it's so neat because you don't see many NFL teams in a city like that, so it's pretty special."
While Shanahan enjoys visiting the historic venue, the 49ers coach is not a fan of Lambeau's notoriously frigid temperatures.
Shanahan recalls his peculiar outfit for 49ers' snow game vs. Packers
By Angelina Martin

Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers have had several memorable NFL playoff matchups with the Green Bay Packers over the years, but one was much colder than the rest.
So when San Francisco and Green Bay faced off at Lambeau Field in the 2021 NFC divisional round, the 49ers coach was adequately prepared for all of the snow in the now-iconic 13-10 comeback victory.
"We went up there. I remember it being freezing," Shanahan told Greg Papa on the latest episode of NBC Sports Bay Area's "49ers Game Plan." "That was the first game I've worn a wetsuit before, a wetsuit under all my clothes to try to stay warm. And I can't tell you how big of a pain that was trying to go to the bathroom at halftime."
Perhaps Shanahan's interesting undergarment choice was a good luck charm, as the No. 7-seeded San Francisco squad defeated a top-seeded Green Bay team thanks largely in part to a blocked Packers punt that the 49ers returned for a game-tying touchdown.

Matt LaFleur isn't afraid to give credit where credit is due.
Ahead of the 49ers’ trip to Lambeau Field on Sunday, the Green Bay Packers coach gave San Francisco’s dynamic backfield duo its flowers.
After all, while Christian McCaffrey remained sidelined for the first half of the 2024 NFL season, Jordan Mason broke out, racking up 685 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 134 carries.
LaFleur noticed that and recognizes the threat a McCaffrey-Mason backfield presents for Green Bay.

Packers fans do not give up their tickets as readily as Rams ticket holders, and Wisconsin is not nearly as easy to get to. On average, 49ers fans are traveling 805 miles to reach San Francisco's Week 12 game and paying a steep price for tickets.
The average price to see the 49ers and Packers on Sunday afternoon is $340 per ticket -- the highest of all Week 12 games -- with the best deal a bit lower at $161.

By Andy Lindquist

John Lynch came to an impassioned defense of 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday, responding to criticism about Shanahan’s coaching during a challenging start to the 2024 NFL season.
“I think Kyle Shanahan is a fantastic coach,” the 49ers GM said on KNBR's "Murph & Markus" show. “I think he gives us an advantage each and every game we go out. Sometimes things just don’t come together and yeah we take that responsibility; I know I do, Kyle does.
“It’s just not what we’d hoped for, it’s not what we expected from this team. But, you’ve got to deal with [it]. Kyle is tough-minded, he’s been around this business for a long time. What he’s solely focused on is fixing the issues that are ailing us. He works tirelessly. I’ve got nothing but belief in Kyle and what he brings to the table. I’m happy and proud to be working with him so we’re working our tails off to try to get this thing right.”
Between injuries and blown fourth-quarter leads, the 49ers have been mediocre this season, with a 5-5 record to show for it. Given the expectations at the start of the season, which included another long playoff run, fans are frustrated with San Francisco’s performance.
Purdy, Bosa out for 49ers vs. Packers; Allen in as QB1
By Matt Maiocco, 49ers Insider

Quarterback Brock Purdy will miss his first start since taking over as the 49ers’ starting quarterback late in the 2022 season.
And he could not come at a lease opportune time.
With the 49ers clinging to slim playoff hopes, Purdy will be sidelined for the team’s crucial game Sunday against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field due to a right shoulder injury.
Purdy underwent an MRI examination, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. The imaging did not show any significant damage, and Purdy has a chance to play against Buffalo in Week 13, Shanahan said.
Five 49ers to watch in pivotal Week 12 NFC showdown vs. Packers
By Matt Maiocco, 49ers Insider

There is not a lot of clarity at this stage of the week for the 49ers.
It seems likely the 49ers will not have Brock Purdy, Trent Williams and Nick Bosa in uniform for their all-important game Sunday against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.
One or more of those players might not be available due to injuries.
Heck, it’s possible all three will have to sit this one out. Purdy tossed a few warmup passes on Thursday and left the field before the start of practice due to a right shoulder issue. Williams (ankle) and Bosa (hip/oblique) were not seen on the practice field Wednesday or Thursday.
Shanahan dispels notion Purdy has regressed in third 49ers season
By Jennifer Lee Chan

SANTA CLARA — Heading into Week 12 with a .500 record, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is trying to keep everything in perspective, including his quarterback.
Brock Purdy had an incredibly productive 2023 NFL season, helping San Francisco reach Super Bowl LVIII while leading the league in multiple quarterback metrics.
While the current season doesn't quite reflect Purdy continuing to progress in his third NFL season, Shanahan believes that if just a few more things went right for the 49ers, everyone would be singing a much different tune.
“I think Brock’s doing a lot of good things,” Shanahan said Wednesday. “But we’re all going to be judged on winning games, and that’s why our team’s got to find a better way to win it there in the fourth so we can get our record right.”

As the Green Bay Packers prepare to host the 49ers, limiting Brock Purdy obviously is front of mind.
The Cheeseheads are familiar with Purdy, who led a late comeback to lift San Francisco over Green Bay in the 2023 NFL Divisional Round.
So, it's no surprise that the Packers had nothing but praise for the 49ers quarterback in the buildup to Sunday's rematch.
Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur was asked Wednesday about what he has seen in Purdy's development throughout his NFL career.
LaFleur, Packers refuse to overlook 49ers despite underwhelming season
By Joel Soria

It’s unwise to overlook any opponent in the NFL – and Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur recognizes that.
Despite the 49ers’ underwhelming season so far, LaFleur and Co. recognize the challenge that it is to face a proven San Francisco team at Lambeau Field on Sunday.
“Yeah, I feel like we’re going up against one of the premier teams in the National Football League,” LaFleur told reporters on Wednesday. “I know their record is certainly not where they want to be right now.
“But I think they got the respect of this league in terms of what they’ve been able to do and what they’re capable of doing. I think they’re as good as any team in the league.”
LaFleur slyly answers if Saleh is helping Packers prep for 49ers
By Angelina Martin

Former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is in enemy territory now.
No longer coach of the New York Jets and instead serving as an offensive consultant for the Green Bay Packers, Saleh is giving coach Matt LaFleur all the help he can ahead of their Week 12 matchup with San Francisco.
"He's been helpful," LaFleur told reporters with a smile Wednesday when asked if Saleh has provided any insight on the 49ers, declining to expand any further.
The ex-Jets coach joined the Packers in a unique role last month after New York fired him, offering LaFleur and his offensive unit a defensive perspective on things. And while LaFleur spent three seasons with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan in Washington from 2010 to 2013, Saleh has more recent experience under Shanahan from 2017 to 2020.
Love admits Packers ‘hungry' for revenge vs. 49ers in Week 12
By Tristi Rodriguez

There is nothing sweeter in sports than revenge.
That's exactly what's on Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love's mind as he prepares to host the 49ers on Sunday at Lambeau Field.
"I think just ending the season, getting into the playoffs and then being knocked out by the 49ers, whoever it would've been, that game is definitely going to sit with you," Love said after practice Wednesday. "And that's what you got to sit with all offseason. Going back and watching that game and seeing what you could've done better, what you could've done differently.
"So it definitely sits with you through the offseason and obviously you move on, but just knowing that's the team that knocked us out, we're definitely hungry for this game."
Bosa, Kittle admit 49ers should be 8-2 if not for mistakes in losses
By Joel Soria

Football is a game of inches, with the smallest mistakes determining wins or losses.
The 49ers were reminded of that in their crushing 20-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, which marked their third blown lead late in the fourth quarter against a division opponent during the 2024 NFL season.
Despite this, defensive end Nick Bosa on Wednesday told reporters the 49ers’ morale is in good shape -- and that minor mistakes aside, San Francisco is a much better team than its 5-5 record implies.
“I think we keep it pretty good,” Bosa said of the team’s morale. “Obviously you don’t want to be down and feel sorry for yourself, but obviously you don’t want to act like nothing is wrong.

SANTA CLARA — Five days before game day, George Kittle declared he will be on the field when the 49ers play the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at Lambeau Field.
The All-Pro tight end missed San Francisco's Week 11 divisional loss to the Seattle Seahawks due to a hamstring injury, but he made it clear Wednesday that he can’t wait to get back on the field.
“I will be playing on Sunday, very excited,” Kittle said. “Can’t pass up playing the Packers, so I will be out there for sure. I get to practice today, it will be very fun and exciting.”
49ers-Packers practice report: Bosa, Williams sit; Purdy limited

SANTA CLARA — Quarterback Brock Purdy was scheduled for limited practice Wednesday as the 49ers begin on-field preparations to face the Green Bay Packers.
“We’ll how this week goes,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “He’s limited today, so that’s good news.”
Defensive end Nick Bosa was not scheduled to practice as he battles injuries to his hip and oblique on both sides. Bosa did not play in the fourth quarter of the 49ers’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

The 49ers are in trouble.
San Francisco’s frustrating 20-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium sent last year’s Super Bowl LVIII runner-up to 5-5 and into last place in the NFC West.
Seven games remain for the 49ers, so there is time for a turnaround. But in the latest segment of “Hitner’s Hot Take,” NBC Sports Bay Area’s Donte Whitner detailed why San Francisco is in serious jeopardy of missing the 2024 NFL playoffs.
“The 49ers are back in panic mode,” Whiter emphatically declared. “In 2024, in the first half of this season, the 49ers have already played six one-score games. And in those six one-score games, they’re only 2-4.

San Francisco defensive end Nick Bosa speaks to reporters after the 49ers’ 20-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.
The San Francisco 49ers now have their backs against the wall.
After collapsing in the fourth quarter to a divisional opponent for the third time this season, the 49ers now are 5-5 with tougher games still to come.
Up next is the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, a rematch of the recent divisional round playoff game in which San Francisco escaped with a 24-21 home win.
Despite being third in the NFC North, the Packers have improved since the playoff bout and own a 7-3 record. Jordan Love has been up and down, throwing at least one interception in every game this season with just one passing touchdown in his last three games, but the Packers' defense has found form as the campaign has progressed.
