49ers 2020 NFL Draft grades: How five-player rookie class turned out

Share

The 2020 NFL Draft has come and gone, and the 49ers were a lot busier than most people expected. While there was a lull in the middle, the bookends were packed with action.

In total, San Francisco ended up picking five new players in the draft. The 49ers also completed three trades involving veterans, acquiring offensive tackle Trent Williams from Washington, and sending Matt Breida and Marquise Goodwin to the Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively.

Here's the 49ers' 2020 draft class:

Javon Kinlaw, DT, 1st round (No. 14 overall)

Grade: A

Landing Kinlaw would have been quite a coup regardless, but the additional fourth-round pick the 49ers added in trading back from the 13th pick to the 14th makes it an overwhelming success.

Brandon Aiyuk, WR, 1st round (No. 25 overall)

Grade: B

Aiyuk fits what the 49ers want to do, and fills a position of extreme need. That said, they passed on the opportunity to acquire a few superior wideouts, and paid a hefty price to land him.

Colton McKivitz, OL, 5th round (No. 153 overall)

Grade: C

A four-year starter at West Virginia, McKivitz figures to provide depth along San Francisco's offensive line. He brings a 6-foot-6 frame and a severe mean streak, which helps him make up for below-average arm length. Despite his college experience, he is somewhat of a project and could stand to fill out his frame a bit more.

Charlie Woerner, TE, 6th round (No. 190 overall)

Grade: B

You don't play tight end at Georgia without learning how to run block. Woerner isn't simply a good blocker; he's one of the best in the entire draft. Though he didn't catch many passes in college (neither did George Kittle), Woerner offers the kind of athleticism and versatility the 49ers are looking for at the position. In the sixth round, you could do a lot worse.

Jauan Jennings, WR, 7th round (No. 217 overall)

Grade: B-

This is a pure upside pick. Jennings will face an uphill climb to make San Francisco's roster, but he definitely has the physical traits to do it. Though he'll never be confused for a speed demon, Jennings brings tremendous size (6-foot-3) and physicality to the position, which the 49ers don't have much of. He projects as a big-bodied, slot receiver who could be a red zone threat.
