The Warriors selected Jonathan Kuminga with the No. 7 overall pick Thursday night, but in the months leading up to the NBA draft, they never thought they'd have that opportunity.
When it actually became a possibility, though, they flew to Miami last weekend to put him through a workout.
"It was probably about an hour. We were able to do measurements -- which is important," Warriors assistant general manager Larry Harris said Friday on 95.7 The Game's "The Morning Roast" show. "When you get a chance to see [a prospect] up close and personal, you get a better gauge for who he is.

"Although it was a 1-on-0 workout, you could see the explosiveness, you could see the power, you could see the drive that he has.
"And then the thing that kind of put it over the top ... all the workout did was confirm, 'Hey, he's 6-foot-8, he's athletic, the shot is not broken -- maybe a tweak here and there' -- so you're convinced from a basketball skills standpoint you can work with this.
"[But] then really what kind of sells us -- character and IQ matter. So just sitting down with him [and] getting to know who he was for a two-and-a-half-hour dinner -- where he's just by himself with us -- the real true character shows up.
"We were impressed with how driven he was, how he was able to carry himself. ... He was impressive."
Warriors president of basketball operations Bob Myers made similar comments Thursday night.
"It's hard for an 18-year-old to sit there and answer questions from an NBA owner, a GM, scouts -- he handled himself really well," Myers said. "He was talking about his parents coming to town. He was excited -- hadn't seen his parents in five years.

"So we got to kind of talk to him about growing up in Africa. He speaks four languages, which is always impressive to somebody like me who speaks one.
"Just his nature. Really nice kid. His brother actually came and worked out for us [too]. His brother has been his father figure while he's been in the U.S. It's important to surround him with support.
"He wants to be great, and it looks like he'll work hard."

Kuminga is 6-foot-8 with a 6-foot-11 wingspan and a 38-inch vertical leap.
He has all the tools to become a big-time player in the NBA.
