Giants prospect Adon suffers apparent arm injury in winter league

Another Giants prospect might have suffered a potentially significant injury this offseason.

Melvin Adon, a right-handed reliever, sustained an apparent right arm injury Friday while making his debut for Toros del Este in the Liga de Beisbol Dominicano.

Adon, the No. 24 prospect in the Giants' farm system according to MLB Pipeline, knew something was wrong as soon as he released the pitch, which sailed high for ball four.

It's not clear if Adon injured his elbow, shoulder or something else entirely, but either way, it doesn't look good for the 26-year-old Dominican Republic native.

Before leaving Friday's game, Adon struck out former big leaguer Sócrates Brito to begin the top of the ninth inning. He got the next batter, Gabriel Guerrero, to ground to second base.

At one point, Adon reached 101 mph on the radar gun.

But then the injury occurred at the end of the third at-bat of the inning, when Adon walked Cristian Santana.

In 2019, Adon dominated Double-A Richmond to the tune of a 2.60 ERA in 45 innings, earning a promotion to Triple-A. But he struggled in 12 games with the Sacramento River Cats, posting a 13.94 ERA.

Two weeks ago, the Giants announced that 20-year-old outfield prospect Alexander Canario suffered a torn labrum while playing in an Instructional League game and needed to undergo surgery.

If Adon's injury is serious, it would be another tough blow for the Giants heading into the 2021 MLB season.
