Matt Olson reached a career milestone Tuesday night, but he couldn’t care less.
The Athletics’ 5-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners was showing all over the 2021 All-Star first baseman’s face during his postgame availability. Even after hitting his 37th home run of the season, a career high. Not even a hint of a smirk was seen.
“Yeah, I mean, obviously the loss, way more important,” Olson said. “You know, cool to surpass a certain number, but wish we could have gotten the win.”

Olson was asked if it was fair to say, despite other career feats on the season (surpassing 100 RBI recently) if the loss meant that these milestones could be deemed pointless.
“Yeah,” he responded.
Olson did tip his cap to the Mariners who have been making their case as a team who should not be ignored in the AL wild-card standings. Seattle tallied nine hits against the A’s.
“I mean, their team’s been good all year,” Olson said.

With 11 games remaining, and the A’s three games behind in the standings, a defeated mentality wouldn’t come as a surprise.

There are no excuses anymore.
“It goes without saying that it’s time to go,” Olson said. So, three games out, 11 games to go, really not a whole lot to lose. We got to go out there and loosen up and play our game and, you know, go out there and compete tomorrow, and the next day, the next day and keep it going and see what happens at the end.”
