49ers sign former Raiders second-round draft pick

The 49ers' season came to an end Sunday with their 26-23 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, and they're already making moves one day later.

The 49ers are signing safety Obi Melifonwu, per Melifonwu's agent Sean Stellato.

San Francisco previously worked out Melifonwu, and clearly came away impressed. It's easy to see why, too.

The Raiders selected Melifonwu in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, largely for his combination of size and athleticism. Standing at 6-foot-4 and 224 pounds, Melifonwu ran a 4.40 40-yard dash and had a 44-inch broad jump. But his NFL career has been far from perfect.

Melifonwu lasted just two seasons and seven total games with the Raiders. He started one game and recorded 10 tackles in his career with the Silver and Black. The UConn product was released by the Raiders in October 2018.

The New England Patriots signed Melifonwu to a two-year contract in November 2019 and he appeared in their win over the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. The Patriots then released him in April 2020.

Though Melifonwu's NFL career hasn't gone as expected thus far, his athleticism makes him well worth a gamble for the 49ers.
