Safety Dashon Goldson, tagged as the 49ers' franchise player, sat out the entire offseason program in hopes of securing a long-term contract.Michael Griffin used a different strategy as the Tennessee Titans' franchise player. He signed the one-year, 6.212 million franchise tender and took part in the team's offseason program. On Tuesday, Griffin agreed with the Titans on a five-year extension that ESPN reports is worth 35 million, including 15 million guaranteed. Those numbers are almost identical to the figure I've heard from league sources in connection with a possible multi-year deal for Goldson. The sides continue to be in contact about working out a long-term contract.
A year ago when Goldson was on the open market, he was seeking a contract worth 8 million annually -- the same amount the San Diego Chargers paid to re-sign Eric Weddle -- sources said. It's not believed that his asking price has come down after he made his first Pro Bowl, fired agent Drew Rosenhaus and hired high-powered CAA for representation.Goldson and the 49ers have until July 16 to work out a long-term contract or Goldson will be allowed only to sign a one-year deal through the end of the regular season. The 49ers' only other unsigned player is first-round pick A.J. Jenkins, a wide receiver selected No. 30 overall in the draft.Jenkins and the 49ers are expected to eventually agree on a four-year, 6.947 million contract with a 3.49 million signing bonus, a source told CSNBayArea.com. The hold-up is likely the amount of guaranteed money. Based on the deals already signed, Jenkins' first three years of salary are likely to be guaranteed.
