Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The St. John's University shortstop was the first middle infielder selected by the Giants with their first overall selection since 1988, when San Francisco tabbed Royce Clayton with their top choice.
Panik is also just the fourth infielder chosen by the Giants with their first overall selection since 1985, joining Will Clark (1985), Matt Williams (1986) and Clayton (1988).
The 6-2, 195-pounder led the Big East Conference with 60 runs scored, a .509 on-base percentage, while being tied for the highest batting average with a .398 clip (90-for-226). Overall, Panik had 19 doubles, three triples and 57 RBI, while leading the Red Storm with 10 home runs and 21 stolen bases during the 2011 season.
