Schierholtz fouled a ball off his foot on Aug. 15 against Atlanta's Tim Hudson and sat out the Giants' game the following day.
However, he returned to the lineup for the final five games of the Giants' road trip and went 6-for-21 with three runs scored, presumably playing on a fractured foot.
When the Giants returned to San Francisco on Monday, a CT scan confirmed the hairline fracture, forcing Schierholtz into a walking boot.
Before the Giants' game on Friday Schierholtz tested the foot with light sprint work and batting practice, but experienced some pain and discomfort.

When the Giants called up LHP Eric Surkamp, a corresponding roster move was on the horizon and speculation was that Schierholtz to the DL would be the response.
Schierholtz is having a breakout year in 2011, batting .278 with nine HR and 41 RBI in 115 games.
The 27-year-old outfielder had nine total home runs in his first 311 games from 2007-2010.
