Report: T-Wolves tried to trade No. 1 pick to Dubs in 2020

The Minnesota Timberwolves last November selected Anthony Edwards with the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and the Warriors snagged James Wiseman with the No. 2 pick.

But according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, the T-Wolves really wanted Golden State to make the first choice.

"To go back to draft night -- the Wolves were very interested in trading out of this pick," Windhorst said on the most recent episode of his Hoop Collective podcast. "They were trying up until they were on the clock, from what I have been told, to get the Warriors interested in moving up.

"The Warriors have their draft pick this year depending on where it falls, and I think they wanted it back quite frankly. They were saber-rattling, according to the stories, that they were gonna take James Wiseman.

"The Warriors were really locked in on James Wiseman."

Golden State owns Minnesota's 2021 top-three protected first-rounder (which becomes unprotected in 2022 if it does not convey this year). And it sounds like the T-Wolves were bluffing in the hopes of the Warriors agreeing to return that asset to Minnesota to ensure they would get Wiseman at No. 1.

Now, that is quite funny because since the moment the T-Wolves won the lottery last August, it widely was assumed there was no way they would pick the 7-foot big man because they already have Karl-Anthony Towns.

And even if the Warriors actually were convinced that Minnesota would in fact pick Wiseman, it's very safe to assume the Warriors would have stood pat at No. 2 and refused to give that future pick back to the T-Wolves.

But hey, nice try T-Wolves.
