Barry believes Embiid can help Warriors more than Simmons

The Warriors' roster for the 2020-21 season is nowhere close to being a finished product.

But Golden State has "a lot of ammo" to use this offseason to put itself in position to compete for the NBA title next year.

There is speculation the Warriors could strike a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers for either Joel Embiid or Ben Simmons.

Hey Rick Barry -- which player would you prefer?

"A guy that can help more would be Embiid," the Basketball Hall of Famer said Tuesday on the "Runnin' Plays" podcast. "He can go inside (and) also can pull the bigger man on another team outside. He can shoot the ball from the outside.

"But the one downside of him -- he's not a real great defensive player. He's not exactly instilling fear in people going to the basket. He's more of an offensive guy than a defensive guy."

Embiid certainly is well known for his ability to punish defenders in the paint, and he has shown the ability to shoot it from beyond the arc (33.1 percent this season).

But the 26-year-old also is a great defender, as he finished runner-up for NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2018, and came in fourth place in 2019.

He would provide legitimate resistance in the paint, which is something the Dubs need.

"They gotta get somebody with some size, somebody that can protect the rim a little bit," Barry said. "It doesn’t have to be a superstar kind of player. You can even do it in a tandem. The Warriors did that before.

"You can't have a team that nobody is afraid of going to the basket worrying about somebody stopping them. That's such an advantage for guys to know that they can't just attack the rim at all -- that there's gonna be someone there challenging them, making it difficult for them."

Yours truly completely agrees with the No. 2 overall pick from the 1965 NBA Draft. And perhaps the Warriors use the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft to address this issue.
