Zaidi reveals which position Giants might target to add bat

With Opening Day right around the corner, the Giants are still looking to address multiple needs.

After signing starting pitcher Carlos Rodon last week, the Giants have since made a few minor moves to the roster, adding depth to the pitching staff and behind the plate. Where they turn next remains to be seen, but many still expect them to add an impact, starting-caliber bat.

Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi joined KNBR's "Tolbert and Copes" on Tuesday afternoon, where he revealed one position in which San Francisco might look to address.

"I think the versatility of our current roster gives us more flexibility to fit a player in at different spots," Zaidi said. "It's possible we bring somebody in who I guess could primarily play second base. And Tommy La Stella has the ability to move around and DH some. That's a spot where we could look to add a bat, although we're looking to get at-bats for Thairo Estrada and Mauricio Dubon. That's something we kind of have to weigh against bringing in a veteran player."

La Stella is currently working his way back from Achilles surgery and his availability for the season opener is in doubt.

Another position that Zaidi mentions is the outfield, where both LaMonte Wade Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski currently lock down two of the three outfield spots, with Darin Ruf, Austin Slater and Steven Duggar also in the mix.

"Then the outfield is kind of the same thing, obviously we've got LaMonte Wade and [Mike Yastrzemski] out there, Darin Ruf is probably going to play a good amount in the outfield. I thought he did a really nice job defensively in addition to the great offense he provided. Wilmer Flores is a guy who can play the infield who is probably going to DH a lot for us. That's not even mentioning a guy like Steven Duggar who played great for us. We have the coverage right now in our position player group to have every position covered and have guys in roles that they've been in the past. I think in that sense we're going to be a little bit opportunistic.

Adames hilariously reacts to breaking Buster's Giants record contract

"Left-handed, right-handed ... as much as anything we're looking for a player who is going to be productive and be a good cultural fit for us and that gives us a few different options."

If the Giants are looking for an impact bat at second base, many have already suggested the possibility of adding former Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story, who could possibly transition to second with Brandon Crawford at short.

Whether the Giants are looking to dip their toes into the top of the free-agent market remains to be seen. What we do know is that they should have plenty of depth up and down the roster.
