The Sharks brought back their only two unrestricted free agents, signing forward Alexander Barabanov and defenseman Jaycob Megna to two-year contract extensions on Monday.
Barabanov, acquired by the Sharks from the Toronto Maple Leafs in April 2021, had 10 goals and 29 assists in 70 games last season, his first full year in the NHL after seven years in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League.
The 2021-22 campaign saw career highs in nearly all offensive categories for Barabanov, who ranks fifth among Sharks skaters with 33 assists and 46 points in 79 games since he was acquired.

The 27-year-old Barabanov, who reportedly wanted to stay in San Jose, spent most of last season on the wing of the Sharks’ top line along with Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl.
"Alexander had a very good first full year in the NHL, showing that he is a consistent point producer and playmaker," interim general Manager Joe Will said. "Paired with his grit and hard work, he has the potential to improve upon his success this past year."

Megna, 29, appeared in 44 games last season after being recalled from the San Jose Barracuda on Oct. 30, recording two goals and six assists. He has 87 career NHL games under his belt, spending much of his career in the American Hockey League after being drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in 2012.

Megna was also selected to represent the United States at the 2022 IIHF Men’s World Championship later this month.
“Jaycob is a reliable player that defends well,” Will said. “He is a high-character person that was recently recognized by Team USA and will be playing for his country at the World Championship.”
