SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants left-hander Barry Zito's trip to a Bay Area podiatrist on Monday, which included specialized x-rays designed to provide a more accurate assessment of the extent of any structural damage in his sprained right foot, confirmed an earlier x-ray's finding that there are no broken bones.
REWIND: Giants' Zito placed on DL, Vogelsong called up
Zito, who suffered the injury while making a play on a popped-up bunt Saturday at Chase Field in Arizona, was placed on the disabled list for the first time in his 12-year career in the big leagues Sunday and is expected to miss a minimum of two starts; a club source indicated that a two-start absence would represent the "best-case scenario." Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, a former top prospect in the Giants organization who recently spent three pitching years in Japan before signing a minor-league deal with San Francisco prior to spring training, was called up to replace Zito in the starting rotation and will make his 2011 with the team Friday against the Braves at AT&T if his services aren't required out of the bullpen in the three-game series at Colorado that wraps up Wednesday.
The Giants are off Thursday but plan to use the day to give the remaining four members of the rotation an extra day of rest.In the fifth year of a seven-year, 126 million contract that includes an 18 million option for 2014 that would vest if he pitches 200 innings in 2013, 400 in 2012-13 or 600 from 2011-2013, Zito is 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in three games and has allowed 12 hits and eight walks over 13 innings of work.Zito, 32, underwent an MRI in Arizona on Sunday and is currently on crutches and wearing an immobilization boot. He has never missed a start with an injury, a streak of 356 assignments during which he's also made two relief appearances.
