Myers reveals Draymond texted him, urged Dubs' draft picks

Even though the 2021 NBA Draft was taking place while it was the middle of the night in Tokyo, Japan, Draymond Green made sure his voice was heard.

The Team USA forward stayed up late while at the Olympics to text Warriors president Bob Myers as the picks were being made in the first round Thursday night.

After the 2021 draft had concluded and the Warriors had taken G League Ignite forward Jonathan Kuminga at No. 7 and Arkansas guard Moses Moody at No. 14, Myers sat down with local reporters and revealed Green texted him with the players he hoped the Warriors would draft with the No. 7 and No. 14 picks.

Unsurprisingly, the Warriors got both players Green wanted Myers to draft.

"Draymond, I talked to at 4 in the morning in Tokyo, at 5 in the morning, 6 in the morning," Myers told reporters. "While we were picking, he texted me after the third or fourth pick, and he said 'Kuminga.' And I said 'We'll see if he's there.' So he's happy. And then at about the ninth pick, he said 'Moody.' And I said 'I don't think he's going to be there.' And I didn't even give him those names. So, he gave me a big thumbs up. That's good. I'm glad he's supportive and appreciate that.

"But I still think, and we think, we need to add some veterans. We're not done yet. That's what we're going to have to do in free agency."

Over the last few years, Green has been heavily involved in the Warriors' pre-draft process. But this year, that has been a bit trickier due to his commitment to Team USA. Still, the three-time NBA champion found a way to add his input.

Prior to the Warriors making the two first-round selections, Green, Steph Curry and Klay Thompson reportedly had urged the front office to look for ways to improve the roster, even if it meant trading the two lottery picks.

Obviously, no trades materialized before the draft, and the Warriors picked Kuminga and Moody.

Green might have wanted the Warriors to trade the draft picks, but once that option was off the table, he used his voice to get the two players he felt can help Golden State the most next season.
