JP, Wiggs get contracts at same time, happy for each other

Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins are very close, but it was not always that way.

Poole spoke to reporters Sunday about his contract extension and shared just how he and Wiggins' relationship has grown in recent years.

"If there's anybody I got really close to as soon as they came, it was Wiggs," Poole said. "He's a pretty closed-off person to himself, he kind of does his own thing, he's in his own vibe."

The 23-year-old added that he and Wiggins gained a connection on and off the court and talk "all the time." Poole also noted that he spoke to Wiggins during the contract extension process since the two-way player had gone through a similar situation with the Minnesota Timberwolves and shared the same agent.

What's more, the young guard reiterated that he was serious about what was said during a live stream on Instagram shortly after the Warriors won Game 6 of the 2022 NBA Finals that he and Wiggins would get paid in the offseason.

"We were locked in all the way through the end and just to kind of have that feeling, just the authenticity, the genuine feeling that we had just to tell each other like, 'Bro we did it, we finished it. Now it's just a matter of time,' " Poole recalled.

Additionally, Wiggins said it's "a blessing" that Poole got an extension and is happy for him because of the time the young guard puts in to improve his craft.

"He works really hard, keeps getting better every year and from where he started out to where he is now, it's unbelievable," the 27-year-old forward said. "The hard work he puts in, everything he gets is well-deserved. So I'm very happy for him."

In all, Poole says it's "amazing" that he and Wiggins signed their contract extensions on the same day and is happy that the duo gets to stay in San Francisco for the foreseeable future.

"I'm glad that he's here in a place where we welcome him and the entire Bay Area welcomes him and Dub Nation welcomes him and he deserves it," Poole concluded.

For the two to be close make sense. Both joined the Warriors during the coronavirus-shortened 2019-20 NBA season and have been teammates ever since, often sharing the court at the same time.

Poole and Wiggins were instrumental in helping the Warriors win their fourth championship in eight years, with the former providing a spark off the bench and the latter defending and rebounding at an incredible rate.

Signing Poole and Wiggins to long-term contracts shows Golden State's commitment to keeping their championship core together, which Warriors general manager Bob Myers says is the "hardest thing" to do

Despite an astronomically high tax bill coming in the near future, the Warriors are more than willing to exchange that to maintain their dynasty going, which will soon fall on Poole and Wiggins' shoulders.
