A day after Buster Posey came out of a game with a left thumb contusion, the Giants added some catching depth. Chadwick Tromp was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento and rookie left-hander Sammy Long was placed on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain, opening up a roster spot.
The Giants can get by with just four starters until the All-Star break if they want to go with three catchers the whole week. They're throwing Kevin Gausman, Johnny Cueto and Alex Wood at the St. Louis Cardinals during a three-game series at Oracle Park and have an off day Thursday, so they can go with Anthony DeSclafani, Gausman and Cueto over the weekend against the Washington Nationals.
Posey came out of Sunday's game in the sixth inning but an X-ray showed no break and manager Gabe Kapler said he was hopeful Posey would be ready off the bench as soon as Monday afternoon. The Giants won't want to push him hard going into the break, though, and Tromp adds another catcher in case Posey needs extra time to heal.

Tromp was called up once already this year and had four hits -- including a homer -- in nine at-bats. He has an .804 OPS and five homers in Triple-A this season.
In other injury news, the Giants announced that Brandon Belt (knee) has started baseball activities. Belt, Evan Longoria and Tommy La Stella are all rehabbing and could be back in late July.
