49ers-Bears injury report: Lance cleared to be backup QB

SANTA CLARA -- Trey Lance wasn't listed on the 49ers' injury report, and he will serve as the team's backup quarterback Sunday, coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday.

Jimmy Garoppolo will start against the Chicago Bears in the Week 8 game. Lance saw limited action with a specific package of plays in three of the first four games of the season before Garoppolo left the lineup for 1 1/2 games due to a calf injury.

Shanahan said it is possible Lance, the No. 3 overall pick, could see action on Sunday.

“Every time Trey is up, there's always potential for him to have a package in the game," Shanahan said.

Lance is returning to action after sustaining a left knee sprain on Oct. 10 against the Arizona Cardinals in his first NFL start. He has thrown for 354 yards and three touchdowns with one interception, and rushed for 133 yards and one TD in four games this season.

Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and edge rusher Dee Ford are listed as doubtful with concussions. Shanahan said it's possible either or both players could be cleared before kickoff.

Left tackle Trent Williams (ankle/elbow) and defensive end Samson Ebukam (ankle) are listed as questionable.

Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw had knee surgery this week and will be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

The 49ers are likely to activate defensive linemen Kevin Givens and Jordan Willis to the 53-man roster to be available for Sunday's game. Givens went on injured reserve after Week 2 with a high ankle sprain. Willis sat out the first six games of the season due to a violation of the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Williams did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday, but he returned to the field in a limited role Friday, before the 49ers were scheduled to travel to Chicago. Rookie Jaylon Moore started the 49ers' Week 7 game against the Indianapolis Colts in place of Williams, an eight-time Pro Bowl player.

Punter Mitch Wishnowsky and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir did not travel with the team to Chicago on Friday due to family reasons but were expected to join their teammates in time to be available for Sunday's game, Shanahan said.

The Bears will not have edge rusher Khalil Mack, the team's leader in sacks, whom they ruled out from playing in Sunday's game because of a foot injury.
