Moss is part of Aldon Smith's support group

SANTA CLARA -- After two significant offseason incidents, 49ers second-year player Aldon Smith said he must surround himself with good people.One of those people is NFL veteran and 49ers newcomer Randy Moss.Moss has spent considerable time talking to Smith, 22, about conduct off the field, a source close to Smith told CSNBayArea.com. Moss reported to training camp on Wednesday -- a full day ahead of his required report date.
In addition, Smith's mother has spent a lot of time in the Bay Area with her son, and 49ers veteran defensive lineman Justin Smith has spoken extensively with the second-year player, the source said.Aldon Smith said he he has received full support from the entire 49ers organization."I've talked to Aldon and that conversation is private," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday. "Aldon doesn't need to re-read the same exact thing that I told him quoted in your newspaper."Said Aldon Smith, "Letting everybody down was probably the saddest part."
Moss has been a major part of the 49ers' support group.During his first meeting with the media since the day he signed a one-year contract on March 12, Moss spoke about his role on and off the field with the 49ers. He was not asked specifically about Aldon Smith."When I first came into this league, I didn't really understand everything that goes on with the NFL," said Moss, 35, a 13-year NFL veteran. "Now that I've matured physically and mentally, my philosophy is I do not like what the NFL does for me. I want to know what I can do to make the NFL better. If that's teaching the young guys and showing guys my professionalism and bringing leadership on and off field, that's what I'll do."If we have that mindset, it'll make it a better league. The league has blessed me and my family, and I'm very fortunate to be in a position I'm in. I like what I can do for the league, not what the league can do for me."Smith was arrested on suspicion of DUI this offseason in Miami. The charge was dropped, he told CSNBayArea.com. The Sacramento Bee reported Smith qualified for a program to reduce the charges to reckless driving.Last month, Smith hosted a house party that got out of control in unincorporated San Jose in which there were two gunshot victims. Smith sustained stab wounds to his shoulder and abdomen from a small knife as he tried to break up a fight, a source told CSNBayArea.com. He spent 2 12 hours in an emergency room to close the wounds with staples.The investigation is ongoing, a Santa Clara Sheriff's Department spokesman said. No suspects have been identified.
