Baalke: Don't blame 49ers ownership for struggles

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Embattled 49ers general manager Trent Baalke on Sunday said 49ers ownership has provided all the resources needed to field a winning team.

In speaking with reporters in the press box two hours before the 49ers were set to play the Arizona Cardinals, Baalke said owners John and Denise York and CEO Jed York have never set any financial restrictions on how he can piece together a roster.

The 49ers are $41.59 million under the salary cap. Only the Cleveland Browns have more unused salary-cap space.

The 49ers were not active in the offseason. The 49ers’ most-significant veteran free-agent signing guard Zane Beadles. Baalke explained in the offseason that his philosophy is to "draft and develop." The 49ers are saving cap space to provide contract extensions to some of their own players.

“The bottom line is, the ownership gives us everything we need to be successful – everything we need,” Baalke said.

“There’s nothing financial holding us back from being successful. And they’re extremely supportive. They let us make football decisions. They support them wholeheartedly. And they give us every resource necessary to do it. So that’s what’s frustrating. If people want to push blame, find it, look right here, because I’m given everything I need to be successful in the job I’m doing. Period.”

The 49ers (1-7) are on a seven-game losing streak since an opening-week victory over the Los Angeles Rams.
