What Shawn Estes misses most about sports during coronavirus hiatus

Editor's note: Like you, NBC Sports Bay Area insiders, reporters and analysts are feeling the sports void during the coronavirus stoppage. They'll share their thoughts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in "What I Miss About Sports." Next up in the series: Giants analyst Shawn Estes.

I miss seeing champions crowned!

With the exception of an exciting Super Bowl, we have been deprived, as of now, of seeing individual champions and team championships. As a fan of many sports, I always look forward to the finale -- the pursuit of being the best, and all that goes with that.

I miss seeing players who rise to the occasion to help their team triumph in a must-win game, or the athlete that digs deep to overcome pressure and adversity to celebrate his or her victory.

With the plug being pulled on all major sporting events for the foreseeable future, I realize how much I looked forward to these monthly spectacles. In March, it'scollege basketball and the Final Four, and eventually the champion cutting down the nets.

I'll miss the second Sunday in April, and the pursuit of the green jacket at the Masters. Who will step up and make a big putt under enormous pressure?

In May, I’ll miss watching the most exciting two minutes in sports, the Kentucky Derby, with the best three-year-old horses in the country duel each other down the final stretch for a chance to wear the Garland of Roses.

June brings the NHL's Stanley Cup Finals and the NBA Finals, watching the best two teams duke it out for a shot to be the last team standing, all the while selfishly hoping for a pressure-packed win-or-go-home Game 7. Sprinkle in the most challenging golf major, the US Open, and June is must-see TV.

July begins with The Championships at the All England Club, hoping to see another Nadal vs Federer finale go five grueling sets with amazing shot after shot. And then this July and August, I was looking forward to my favorite event, the Summer Olympics. I enjoy watching the best athletes from around the world take a shot at a medal in what may a once in a lifetime opportunity.

With tremendous amounts of pressure and the whole world watching, I'm always proud to see our athletes make dreams come true and hear the Star-Spangled Banner playing with our flag waving in the background. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until next year for that.

I’m going to stop at this point, because I’m hoping life will get back to normal by the time the U.S. Open Tennis Championships take place and the Ryder Cup happens on our turf at Whistling Straits. Hopefully then, champions will again be crowned!
