Former Raiders DE Anthony Wayne Smith, who was awaiting aretrial for a murder charge that ended in a hung jury, had new charges leviedagainst him on Monday.

The Long Beach Press Telegram reported the 45-year-old Smithhas been charged with three more murders that could result in the death penaltyfor the former member of the LosAngeles and Oakland Raiders.Smith played in 98 games with the Silver and Black from1991-1997. Prosecutors brought the new charges against Smith 45 minutes before juryselection was to get underway for his re-trial for the 2008 murder of MaurilioPonce.Smiths attorney, Michael S. Evans, told the Long Beach Press Telegram the new charges Cameas quite a surprise.The new charges include the 1999 shooting slayings of Kevinand Ricky Nettles and the 2001 stabbing murder of Dennis Henderson. Prosecutors say each crime was committed with special circumstances, including the infliction of torture.
Prosecutors said they will decide later whether to seekthe death penalty.Smith was chosen by the Raiders in the first round of the 1990NFL Draft. He attended college at Arizona and Alabama.
