A waiver deal between the Giants and the Padres for Heath Bell did not materialize and the deadline for the burly closer passed Friday with no changes to either team's roster.

CBSSportsline.com and Sports Illustrated reported the news shortly after the 10 a.m. deadline arrived. The Giants placed a claim on Wednesday but no agreement could be reached within the 48-hour window.

The Giants, with both Sergio Romo and Brian Wilson sidelined from their bullpen, could have used an experienced arm at the end of games, but an agreement eluded GMs Brian Sabean and Jed Hoyer.

Bell, 33, is set to be a free agent season's end. He has 35 saves and a 2.55 ERA, with 40 strikeouts in 53 innings.
