Report: Looney exercising $5.2M option to return to Warriors

Growing up, Warriors center Kevon Looney looked up to both Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant, who will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Saturday.

Kevon Looney will not be testing free agency this summer.

The Warriors big man is exercising his option for 2021-22 worth just under $5.2 million, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

This means that Looney -- who signed a three-year, $14.5 million contract in 2019 -- is slated to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2021-22 season ends.

The 25-year-old averaged 4.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 61 games (34 starts) last season.

Looney is a valuable rotation player and is a favorite of coach Steve Kerr.

The No. 30 overall pick from the 2015 draft in mid-May was asked if he believes Steph Curry will buy him a gift for registering a bunch of screen assists that helped the two-time NBA MVP win the scoring title.

“If Steph wants to give me something, he can get me a new contract," Looney said to The Athletic's Marcus Thompson while laughing. "I’ll take one of those.”

It looks like that will have to wait another year.
