On August 29, A’s pitcher Daniel Mengden tested positive for COVID-19 while the team was away in Houston. Bob Melvin spoke on the A’s player and his trust in his teams ability to follow MLB protocols.

The A's reinstated Daniel Mengden from the COVID-19 injury list Sunday, but also designated the right-handed pitcher for assignment.

Mengden, 27, tested positive for the coronavirus on Aug. 28 when the A's were in Houston. He's a Houston native and was self-quarantining at his home.

The A's game on Aug. 30 in Houston was postponed as a result of Mengden's positive test. It was made up Tuesday, Sept. 8, with a doubleheader in Oakland. The A's won the makeup game, 4-2, but fell in the nightcap.

A's general manager David Forst said Mengden was asymptomatic and that no Oakland players or staff broke protocol at the time of the positive test result.

Mengden appeared in four games this season, making four starts. He went 0-1 with a 3.65 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. He has a 17-20 career record with the A's, and a 4.64 ERA.

The A's enter Sunday 33-19, good for the No. 3 seed in the AL playoff picture.
