Quakes Fall 2-0 to Red Bulls on Henry's First Goal

HARRISON, N.J.Dane Richards bagged a goal and an assist to Thierry Henry, who scored his first MLS goal as the New York Red Bulls authoritatively dispatched the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 Saturday night at Red Bull Arena.For Henry, playing in his sixth MLS match, it was a very activenight as the French superstar constantly was active in the attackingthird and proved to be a handful for the Earthquakes back line.The match started strong for New York, who saw the field tilt in thedirection of their attack early and often. The Red Bulls firstopportunity came in the third minute when a searching cross down theleft flank found an on-rushing Richards, who shot just wide. Eight minutes later, following two beautiful cutback moves down theleft flank, Rafa Mrquez served a right-footed ball into the box thatwas headed away by the Earthquakes Brandon McDonald. The ball fell to Henry about 10 yards away but his soft effort was cleared off the line by Tim Ward.Following a Juan Pablo Angel shot in the 19th minute that forced San Joses Jon Buschinto a solid save, Henry nearly had his first league goal two minuteslater, but he squandered an ngel cross into the penalty area. Henryseffort beat Busch, but not the post.San Jose had few chances in the first 45 minutes. In the 25th minute, Cornell Glen was sent a ball that beat the New York back line and allowed him in alone on Bouna Coundoulin New Yorks goal. But the striker pushed his effort wide right ofgoal. Another good opportunity came 10 minutes later from Glen, but hiscontested shot yards in front of goal went wide again.The strong start looked like it would amount to nothing for NewYork, but in first-half stoppage time, the Red Bulls took the lead.Taking a ball headed back to him by Joel Lindpere,midfielder Richards trapped it outside the penalty area and danced hisway through two San Jose defenders before sidestepping Busch in goaland tapping the ball into an open net. It was the Jamaicaninternational's first goal of the season.The Red Bulls nearly doubled the lead four minutes after halftime. Taking a Roy Millercross from the left flank, Henry back-heeled an effort from a dozenyards out and his audacious effort forced Busch into a sprawling save.ngel pounced on the rebound but, despite a nearly open goal, smashedhis effort off the post. Just three minutes later, Henry chipped an effort onto goal thatforced Busch to push the effort over the crossbar athletically. On theensuing corner kick, Mrquez pounced on a loose ball and powered theeffort just inches wide of goal.All the energy and momentum once again paid off when, in the 63rdminute, the wait finally ended for Henry. Following some good work downthe right flank, Richards found some separation and poked in a nicecross towards the penalty spot. Controlling the ball with his instep,Henry slammed a shot home into the bottom right corner of the goal forhis first league tally in league play.The Earthquakes never seemed destined to score, even with a good chance in the 78th minute when a Bobby Convey cross towards Glen was somehow poked away by Tim Ream at the last minute. San Jose's insertion of Designated Player Geovanni in the 55th minute did little to spark the Quakes'offense as the dominance of the New York midfield in supplying qualitychances throughout the night proved too much for the visitors to handle.Scoring Summary:NY -- Dane Richards 1 (Joel Lindpere 4) 46
