Chris Wondolowski one away from Landon Donovan's MLS goals record

Earthquakes striker Chris Wondolowski's header against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday moved him a goal away from tying U.S. soccer legend Landon Donovan for the all-time record in MLS.

With San Jose trailing 3-0 in the 83rd minute, New York's defense left Wondolowski unmarked on Tommy Thompson's free kick, and Wondolowski did the rest for his 144th career goal.

But Wondolowski's goal could not spark an Earthquakes comeback, as San Jose lost its sixth straight game. The Earthquakes sealed their lowest point otal in club history with the loss.

The 35-year-old's tally was his 10th of the season. Wondolowski has now scored at least 10 goals in nine straight seasons.

The Chico State product has two more chances this season to match -- or surpass -- Donovan's 145 MLS goals. After the international break next weekend, Wondolowski and the Earthquakes will play the Colorado Rapids at Avaya Stadium on Oct. 21, before closing the season in Seattle on Oct. 28.
