SAN JOSE – For the third time in his Sharks career, Joe Thornton was selected as the team’s Player of the Year as chosen by the local media.
The 36-year-old veteran led the Sharks in scoring with 81 points (19g, 62a) headed into Saturday night’s season finale with Arizona, and was tied for fourth in the NHL in scoring.

Thornton received 19 first place votes out of 31, as well as seven second place votes and three third place votes. Joe Pavelski, Brent Burns, Martin Jones and Marc-Edouard Vlasic rounded out the top five.
Thornton, a potential candidate for both the Hart and Selke Trophies, has continued to ascend on the NHL’s all-time scoring list this season. He’s 14th in league history with 963 assists, and 28th in points with 1,340.
Pavelski won the award the previous two seasons, while Thornton captured it in 2005-06 and 2006-07.
Other winners announced Saturday were Joonas Donskoi as Sharks rookie of the year, Burns for fan favorite, and Pavelski the “Three Stars of the Year” award.
