Sharks' Marcus Sorensen still skating, keeping routine while in Sweden

Unlike many NHL players, Sharks forward Marcus Sorensen is still skating during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“Here in Sweden, I’ve got good contacts with one of the rinks,” Sorensen said Monday via FaceTime. “So I’m renting my own ice time here, bringing a couple buddies and play.”

The 28-year-old is following health protocols in Sweden, but remains in his routine and ready for whatever hockey news breaks.

“I’m staying pretty much like a normal season,” Sorensen said.

It’s no secret that many NHL players in North America have tapered their workouts with no access to team facilities and no imminent return of scheduled games or playoffs. Elite hockey players typically lose their timing within a matter of weeks when not able to skate.

“I would say the hand coordination,” Sorensen mentioned as the first thing that goes away. The legs also quickly deteriorate, too.

“The conditioning is one of the worst things to go back and play a full 60-minute game,” he added.

Whenever the NHL does return, Sorensen believes it'll be necessary to include a significant period of time for players to go through an expedited training camp.

“Some people are faster to be able to get into that condition,” Sorensen said. “But I would say two weeks is pretty much normal.”

Coming off an uncharacteristic season for the Sharks, both as a team and set of individuals, Sorensen was quick to self-evaluate.

“First of all, I would start with myself," he explained. "Play my game from day one. I think I tried to do that. I know how I can get better.

“I know we have a strong connection in the team, but we should build it even better. We are a good playoff team, and are one of the best in the league when we play the right way.”
