Sharks trade Dubnyk to Avalanche for Pateryn, draft pick

The Sharks have found a new home for goalie Devan Dubnyk.

Dubnyk has been traded to the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Greg Pateryn and a 2021 fifth-round draft pick, the Sharks announced on Saturday morning.

The 34-year-old Dubnyk was brought in this offseason in a trade with the Minnesota Wild, and has a .898 save percentage in 17 games this season for the Sharks. The resurgence of Martin Jones since March made Dubnyk expendable, and this confirms the reports from a few weeks ago that indicated Dubnyk would waive his no-trade clause for a deal to a contender.

“Devan brought the element of consummate professionalism and class to our dressing room, in what has been an extremely unique and challenging season,” Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement. “He fit seamlessly within our group and helped mentor many of our younger players. We thank him for his contributions to our club on and off the ice this season and wish him the best in Colorado.”

Colorado is at the top of the Honda West Division with 58 points, four ahead of the second-place Vegas Golden Knights.

Pateryn has two points in 11 games with the Avalanche this season, also spending time with the organization's AHL affiliate. The 30-year-old has three goals in 10 games with the Colorado Eagles.

The Sharks are able to add a draft pick while also bringing in a defenseman who could add some depth to the blueline. Moving Dubnyk also allows the Sharks to potentially get prospects Alexei Melnichuk or Joesf Korenar some opportunities in goal over the final stretch of the regular season.

Dubnyk gives Colorado a veteran reserve netminder who could spell the Avalanche's goalies over the final weeks of the regular season going into the Stanley Cup Playoff.
