Sharks to rely on Jones in goal after Dubnyk's injury

The Sharks have relied on a platoon in goal to begin the 2020-21 season, but those plans have changed after the team announced Thursday that Devan Dubnyk will be day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

Martin Jones will make his second consecutive start in Thursday's clash with the Los Angeles Kings, after saving 24 of 27 shots on goal in a Tuesday night win over the Kings.

The team did not specify when the injury occurred, but Dubnyk's last appearance came Saturday in a shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks.

The two have split duties through all the Sharks' two-game series this season, with the lone exception being the opening two-game stretch against the Arizona Coyotes.

Dubnyk, who joined the Sharks this offseason after five full seasons with the Minnesota Wild, is 0-3-1 over his four starts this year with a .917 save percentage.

Jones, who has been the Sharks' primary goalie for the past five years, is 5-2 over seven starts this season, but holds just an .878 save percentage.

Alexei Melnichuk was recalled from the San Jose Barracuda to be Jones' backup for Thursday night's game. The 24-year-old rookie made his North American debut on Feb. 7 and has played in two AHL games this season.

The Sharks hope Dubnyk can return to the ice soon, but goaltending duties will lie primarily in Jones' hands once again for now, as the team looks to climb back up the standings.
