Report: NHL to allow jersey ads starting in 2022

The NHL reportedly will permit teams to place ads on the front of their jerseys starting in the 2022-23 season. The news was first reported by Sportico.

The NHL’s board of governors reportedly approved of the move unanimously.

This is the first time jerseys ads will be seen in game action. Organizations have been able to place ads on their practice jerseys since 2010, while American Hockey League teams have worn jersey ads for a handful of years now.

Teams were able to put ads on their helmets beginning in the 2020-21 season. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in June that ads can continue on helmets during the 2021-22 season, while the jersey ads will not begin this upcoming season.

The helmet move helped the league financially, as Bettman said that teams "retained more than $100 million in revenue" because of those ads and other money-drawing changes. The NBA’s jersey ads boosted revenue by $150 million annually, according to Sportico.

Jersey ads will be 3 inches by 3.5 inches and placement reportedly will be determined by teams, allowing teams to complement their jersey designs. The size of the ads is slightly bigger than the ones that have been on NBA jerseys for several seasons.
