Report: Bruins assistant Sacco to interview for Sharks HC role


Per Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey Now, Joe Sacco will interview for the Sharks head coach position this coming week.

Sacco has been an assistant coach with the Boston Bruins since 2014, his penalty kill finishing top-three in the NHL four times. Previously, he was head coach of the Colorado Avalanche from 2009-13.

Most recently, Sacco interviewed for the Bruins head coaching job that went to Jim Montgomery.

Sacco also enjoyed a long playing career, skating for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, New York Islanders, Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers from 1990 to 2003. He represented Team USA at the 1992 Winter Olympics.

There is a Boston University connection between Sacco and new Sharks general manager Mike Grier: Sacco played at BU from 1987-90, and Grier from 1993-96. Both are also Massachusetts natives; Grier grew up in Holliston and Sacco in Medford as part of the proud Sacco hockey family.
