Tomas Hertl is staying in San Jose.
The Sharks agreed to an eight-year contract extension with their star center, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.
Hertl appeared to react to the news with a tweet of a smiley face.

TSN's Pierre LeBrun and Chris Johnston first reported the deal was being finalized earlier Wednesday.
While the Sharks did not disclose terms of the deal, Johnston reported that the contract holds an Average Annual Value (AAV) of about $8 million. That AAV would place Hertl tied for 40th among all NHL players, and tied 14th among all centers in terms of average salary.
"Tomas has evolved into a premier top-line centerman in the league, competing against the NHL's best players every single night and delivering significant results," assistant general manager Joe Will said. "There are few centermen in the NHL with his combination of physical and dynamic play and he is a player that you build a franchise around. We are fortunate to have two of the league's top centermen on one team with Tomas and Logan Couture.

"By agreeing to this contract, Tomas is cementing his path with the Sharks, following in the footsteps of some incredible players who have worn the Sharks crest. He has shown that he wants to play in San Jose for years to come and it shows his dedication to the organization and community since he joined the team in 2012. We are thrilled to have Tomas for another eight years."
Hertl was drafted by the Sharks in 2012 with the 17th overall pick. He made his NHL debut the following season and has spent the last eight seasons in San Jose.
The 28-year-old was named to the NHL All-Star game in 2020 when Sharks teammate Logan Couture was sidelined with an injury. Hertl scored four goals in the Pacific Division’s 10-5 victory over the Central Division, making him the first Sharks player to score four goals in an All-Star game.
This season, Hertl has recorded 25 goals and 23 assists, good for 48 points. The Sharks are currently second-to-last in the Pacific Division with a 26-25 record.
This deal essentially doubles Hertl’s tenure with the Sharks.
