BOX SCORE

NEWARK –- Patrick Marleau and Adam Henrique scored in regulation, but the Sharks grabbed the extra point in the shootout to remain perfect on the season on Friday in New Jersey, with a 2-1 victory over the Devils.

Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns converted in the skills competition to give the Sharks their fourth straight win to open the season.

Marleau’s early first period goal, his third, was the only scoring until late in the third. The winger took a pass from Joel Ward and whacked it through Cory Schneider at 2:01, with new center Tomas Hertl getting the secondary assist.

Marleau had a golden chance to increase the Sharks lead. He bolted through the neutral zone in the second period for a breakaway, and a hook by Andy Greene resulted in a penalty shot at 13:42. Marleau couldn’t beat Schneider for a second time, though, taking a wide angle to the net and try to go through the goalie’s five-hole.

On their fourth power play of the third period due to a borderline too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty, Henrique redirected in a Damon Severson blast at 16:22 to send it into overtime.

The goal ended Martin Jones’ and the Sharks’ shutout streak at 234 minutes and 33 seconds, a new individual and franchise record.

Earlier in the third, the Sharks took three consecutive minor penalties as Justin Braun, Brenden Dillon and Marc-Edouard Vlasic headed to the box. New Jersey was in prime position to get the equalizer, getting one minute total of two-man advantage time during the Sharks’ parade to the sin bin.

The Devils tallied just three shots on goal in their first power plays, though, and none while on their two brief two-man advantages. They finally converted on Henrique’s tip, the first goal the Sharks surrendered on the penalty kill this season.

During the first-ever three-on-three overtime for both clubs, each team had chances to end it. Kyle Palmieri fired wide on a breakaway, and later Burns deked his way towards the net only to be stopped by Schneider.

For the second straight game, the Sharks had a goal-against waved off due to goalie interference. Jacob Josefsen jammed in the rebound of a Brian Gionta shot, but only after Gionta plowed into Jones in the final minute of the second period.

San Jose, playing without Logan Couture who will miss 4-to-6 weeks with a fractured right fibula, won its fourth straight game in New Jersey. The Devils dropped to 0-4-0, and have yet to gain a single lead.

The game marked coach Peter DeBoer’s first game back at Prudential Center since he was fired in late December after three-and-a-half seasons.

Overall, San Jose is 6-2-0 in its last eight versus the Devils.

Special teams

The Sharks were 5-for-6 on the penalty kill. They had just one power play in the game, failing to score after Jon Merrill’s hooking minor late in the second.

San Jose is 3-for-15 with a man advantage through the first four games.

In goal

Jones finished with 31 saves. He set a new Sharks franchise record shutout streak just 45 seconds into the first period, breaking Alex Stalock’s mark of 178:11.

His best save came early when he robbed Tuomo Ruutu on a rebound try just after Marleau scored, quickly moving from his left to his right.

Schneider was playing for the first time since the Devils’ opener, missing the previous two games due to the birth of his son. He allowed one goal on 34 shots.

Lineup

Nikolay Goldobin, the 27th overall pick in the 2014 draft, made his NHL debut. He drew the penalty on Merrill, and finished with one shot on goal in 11:52 of ice time while skating mostly on the Joe Thornton-Joe Pavelski line.

Couture, who played in all 82 games last season, missed his first game since March 25, 2014.

Joonas Donskoi was scratched, still feeling the effects of a blocked shot against the Ducks on Oct. 10, and despite playing Tuesday against the Capitals.

Up next

The Sharks continue their road tour of the Metropolitan Division by making their first ever appearance at Barclays Center on Saturday to battle the Islanders. A match with the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Monday follows, to conclude their four-game road trip.

San Jose hosts the Los Angeles Kings next Thursday, Oct. 22.
